Transmission fluid (ATF) in an automatic transmission is considered a functional “component,” as it is used to transmit hydraulic pressure to the transmission’s actuators. Without pressure, there is no movement. Therefore, both the condition and the level of the fluid are critical for proper transmission operation. Transmission fluid is subject to processes similar to engine oil, such as heating and cooling cycles, oxidation, and ageing. However, the fundamental difference between ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) and engine oil (Oil) is that ATF is designed to increase the coefficient of friction, allowing clutch packs to engage quickly, eliminate slippage, and ensure smooth gear engagement without prolonged slipping. Engine oil, by contrast, is designed to reduce friction and increase lubrication between moving parts.
Over time, ATF loses its properties (frictional characteristics, partial lubricating capability, heat dissipation efficiency, etc.), which is why it must be replaced regularly. Some manufacturers state that the transmission is “filled for life,” but this typically refers only to the warranty period. In such cases, the first fluid change is usually performed at around 100,000 km, and subsequently every 50,000–60,000 km. However, the service interval may be shortened depending on operating conditions, the volume of fluid replaced, accessibility of the filter during servicing, and other factors.
